He then spent a brief period as a visiting scientist at Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA), funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds. After, he worked as a post-doctoral scholar in the lab of Linda Buck (Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine 2004) at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle (USA). There he investigated which olfactory receptors recognize pheromones and other 'general odors', how these environmental cues can modulate behavior and physiology, and how these cues can be translated into perception. In 2013, he was awarded the EBI–Sanger Postdoctoral (ESPOD) Fellowship and continued his studies in the labs of John Marioni (EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute) and Darren Logan (Wellcome Sanger Institute) in Cambridge (UK). He helped pioneer and apply single-cell RNA-sequencing technologies to a wide range of biological systems, for which he won a Sanger Early Career Innovation Award in 2014. Currently, he is a Principal Investigator at Sidra Medicine (Qatar), and holds Adjunct Faculty positions at Monell Chemical Senses Center (USA) and Hamad bin Khalifa University (Qatar). His laboratory deploys and/or develops biological assays to unravel molecular mechanisms underlying specific neural and metabolic processes, aiming to advance fundamental science and translate our findings into new diagnostic and personalized treatment options for patients affected by diseases of the senses, brain, kidney, and heart. In recognition of his scientific achievements, his continued efforts to inspire younger generations to pursue science, and to promote science among the general public, he was awarded the Silver Medal of Merit by the Mayor of Manteigas (his hometown in Portugal) in 2020.
